Writing Narrative Prompt

These are pictures of boats that have been used by Cubans trying to get to Florida, just like in our story Refugee.

  1. Make a list of what resources (stuff) you can see that they have used to build their boat

  •   Metal sheet

  •  Can

  •  Wood

  •  Bark for rope

  • Plastic

  • Car motor

  • And Motorbike motor

  1. The journey between Havana and Miami is 510km - the same as driving from Auckland to Palmerston North. In this kind of boat, that trip would take almost 2 days. What kind of resources (stuff) do you think the people would take with them in the boat to survive the 2 days?

  •  water

  •  Fishing rod

  •   Fuel

  •  worms

  •  Clothes

  •  Blankets

  • and  big long plastic sheet

  1. If they had room, what resources do you think the would take that would help them once they arrived in the United States of America? Explain why they need that thing.

  •  Seed to grow

  • Clothes to sell

  •  Wood to build a house

Now you are going to write a narrative using one of the pictures above (you choose which one!).

Think about our story Refugee while you are planning…

Remember the structure for a narrative is

Paragraph 1

Introduction

Hook the reader in with dialogue, quickly introduce the characters and what is happening.

What, who, when, where, how, why.

Paragraph 2

Orientation

Talk about the characters, how the characters know each other, explain through dialogue why they are going on a boat, etc

Paragraph 3

Problem

Something bad that happens

Paragraph 4

Solution

How that bad thing is overcome

Paragraph 5

Conclusion

How they get to Miami (at least ONE character has to get there in the end!).

Remember you can have more than one problem and solution - have as many as you want, as long as they make sense!

Don’t forget your dialogue (people talking or thinking), similes and metaphors, difficult words, punctuation like ? ! “ “ ; : - / …

**bonus points if you can put in some Spanish, or a reference to them using pesos**

Use this box to brainstorm your ideas and plan out your story.

‘Wake up Agerash it time to work on the boat,’ said Malo. Malo was an old man. He was in his 50s. He was tall, always happy and had dark skin. Soon after Agerash  woke up and ate some food their family is very poor and can only eat can beans then he went to the shed to help the dad with the boat.
