Define these words from the text

  • Yielding- something not hard or rigid

  • Wilderness- is the wild

  • Batons- stick 

  • Wood splintering 

  • Hauled- forced to be pulled

  • Settlement- when they set up their house or something

  • Scarcely- able to breathe 

  • Droned- a low humming sound

  • Stifling-very hot room causing difficulties to breathe 

  • Unsteady - something that's not ready to use 

  • Disobedience- Disobedience means failure or refusal to obey rules or someone.

  • Barely- don't really know them

  • Clarity- being coherent and intelligible.

  • Ridge long, narrow hilltop, mountain range, or watershed.

  • Porch- a covered protecting in the front entrance.

  • Upstream opposite direction  


Explain what a ‘muse’ is.



  • Where was Tre the day the voids turned up? How do you know? He was in class because you can see 

the teacher reading a book.


  • What is the author implying by saying “as if they had done it a thousand times before?” (page 4)in the town it looked like that the voids have destroyed that town before.


  • Where are Tre’s mum and dad? Why do you think this? At the hidden place


  • What language feature is “as white as a hospital sheet”. it is white metaphor

  • How far away was the new school from Tre’s old house? How do you know this?very far away 2-3 days because it said the voids have been quiet for a few days.


  • Does hushed mean killed? How do you know? If not, what else could it mean?no it means get hurt


  • What is “the pen” (page 11)’ prison

  • What was dad trying to tell Tre? Why couldn’t he just tell him where his/mum were? Because guards were listening.


  • On page 14, what happens to tre when “his voice catches”? He catched a feeling 


  • Why is Muse the one who rows the boat? Cause tre know where to go


  • What language feature is “The harakeke closes in, swallowing them up”.the harakeke is coming closer
